Too much Wood for the Beavers

Despite the defeat, positives for the squad.

In the first of the club's home preseason games, the Beavers went down to a 3-1 defeat, conceding two goals inside the last 10 minutes.

The game had an explosive start as the Wood took the lead in the opening couple of minutes; Sorba Thomas heading home from close range following some good work down the Hampton right by Ricky Shakes.

The lead was short-lived as Hampton got right back into the match before 5 more minutes had passed.

Tyrell Miller-Rodney found space on the overlap down the right, his perfectly timed cross was met by midfielder Sam Deadfield, and his powerful header beat Ryan Huddart in the visitors goal.

The game then settled down into a pretty even contest, the midfield battle being one of both teams matching each other, and goal chances were few and far between.

On the half hour, Adam McDonnell clipped in a dangerous freekick which had Hampton keeper Laurie Walker stretching as it clipped bar on its way over as the scores stayed level into half time.

In the second half, it was much more of the same and both managers rang the changes; just after the hour, the Wood looked like they would break through but Louis Stead's challenge on Thomas just cleared the danger as the striker lined up his shot.

A goal mouth scramble in the Hampton box, ten minutes later, looked for all the world like the Wood would force it home but it took a goal line clearance by Jack Strange to keep the ball out of the Hampton net.

The game was winding down into the final ten minutes and Boreham Wood took advantage of the tiring Hampton side to take the lead. Piero Mingoia found himself in space at the edge of the box as the Wood broke forward, his accurate shot beating substitute keeper Andy McCorkall.

The visitors concluded the scoring with a couple of minutes left as a trialist turned his defender and fired past McCorkall and into the corner of the net.

The first half display was pleasing and it will be interesting to see if this is carried on against Chesham United on Tuesday evening, kick off 7-45 at the Jezzards Beveree.
