Ladies Team through to Cup Final!
Ladies team do the treble over Chobham Burymead to get through to the Russell Cup Final
Sunday saw the Ladies Team travel to Chobham Burymead to face them for the third time this season, this time it was for the Russell Cup Semi Final. With Hampton’s eyes on the double everyone knew Chobham would put up a fight and it was not going to be an easy game. The Beavers were down to 11 players before the game with holidays, illness and work commitments putting some players out of action and it took a lot for the Beavers to get into the game mentally.
On a poor pitch which was rock solid and looked as though it had not been cut for weeks, the team found it hard to get into their normal game of flowing football. The sluggish start for the Beavers was punished when Chobham took the lead on the 29th minute. Hampton came straight out from the kick off and won a corner on the 30th minute. Katie Foster fired in the corner which was headed on at the front post by a Chobham defender which made its way past the keeper into the back of the net putting the score all level. The game was tough for the Beavers with Katie Foster, Bianca Underhill and Louise Clarke being marked out of the game and finding little room to do anything with the ball.
At half time the score remained 1-1 and with a positive team talk at half time Hampton were positive that they could produce something in the second half and prove exactly why they are Champions. The team talk certainly worked when Hampton won a free kick on the right side of the box on the 48th minute. Katie Foster put in a superb ball for Louise Clarke to run into the box completely unmarked and slot the ball into the net at the back post. At 2-1 up the team knew they would need to remain strong and could still press for a 3rd goal. The third goal didn’t come but a very solid performance from the back 5 ensured that the Beavers didn’t allow Chobham the equaliser. Towards the end of the game the game became quite feisty with some strong challenges being put in on a number of the Hampton players but the referee managed to keep the game under control and not allow the tussles to go any further. The Hampton midfield remained solid all game and despite some crunching tackles, gave everything they had until the final whistle.
The game ended with Hampton winning 2-1 and going through to face Clapham Utd Reserves in the Russell Cup Final. A hard fought win for the team was thoroughly deserved and this sees the Beavers take a 3rd win from 3 matches over Chobham to see them continue their phenomenal run this season. After the game manager Leah Ambridge was proud of her players saying; 'every player played there hearts out and played with a lot of pride. Kerry, Sharna and Hayley took some sensational tackles and remained solid in the middle. Lou C, Kate and Bianca worked hard up front creating opportunities and the back 5 remained solid keeping the Chobham strikers at bay. I want to thank all of the supporters and Dave Marlow for running the line. Onto the next game and bring on the final!'
