Ladies team go 18 league games unbeaten to win the league by 12 points!
Sunday saw the end of the league season, the last game the Ladies would play in Division 2. A win or draw would mean that the team had gone the full league season without losing a game, an amazing achievement for the side. The opponents for this fixture were Clapham United Reserves, a warm up for the Cup Final? Quite possibly!
The game started at a fast pace with the first goal coming only 3 minutes into the game. Kate Foster found herself on the edge of the box and turning 2 defenders she put a ball through to Bianca Underhill who hit it first time across the goal finding the far corner. A superb start to the game got even better when on the 6th minute Melika Banton in centre mid put a though ball through to Kate Foster who outpaced 3 defenders and set herself up on goal from 30 yards out. With the keeper indecisive as to whether she should come out one on one or track back, Kate took the shot from 30 yards lobbing the keeper and putting the Beavers 2-0 up after only 6 minutes. Clapham came straight out after the kick off on the attack and managed to pull a goal back just a minute later.
There were a number of chances in the first half with the post and crossbar denying the Beavers on more than one occasion but the Beavers found the 3rd goal on the 30th minute when Kate had a one on one saved by the Clapham keeper only for the ball to fall to the feet of Melika who curled the ball around a defender and the keeper to put the score line at 3-1. The Beavers were 3-1 up at half time but knew the second half was not going to be easy.
In the second half, the game became quite tense with Hampton having a number of chances but couldn’t find the finishing they had in the first half and Clapham were fighting back stronger. Clapham got the score line to 3-2 within the first 10minutes of the half and came out firing in the early stages of the second half. Clapham won a penalty 20minutes into the second half which was thankfully saved by Emma Marlow, who then when onto make an instant and solid second save against the Clapham strikers rushing into the box. The Hampton back four and midfield 5 were doing a brilliant job of making the most of the attacking play but tiredness started to set in 5minutes before the end of the game when a through ball found the Clapham striker who put the ball in the back of the net for the equaliser. A solid Hampton performance meant they were very unlucky not to win the game with a large number of chances which could have put the game to bed within the first 30mins of the match but a draw is a great result.
This result means that the Ladies team have gone 18 league games unbeaten which is a brilliant achievement for the side with a lot more still to look forward to. Manager Leah after the game said; “it’s been an unbelievable season and I am so proud of my ladies, they are a credit to themselves, to me and to the club. We have a great team spirit and this journey with the team this has been a dream. Our focus is now on the Cup Final and we will work hard to ensure that we are as prepared as we can be for the big game.”
