Ladies team thrash the 8 players of AFC Phoenix 17-0 in Cup Quarter Fina
On a sunny yet windy day the ladies team played hosts to AFC Phoenix Reserves in the Russell Cup quarter final with another piece of silverware in their sights. Most people reading with will have seen that the score-line was a proper thrashing of 17-0 so it makes writing a match report extremely difficult. Without wanting to discuss every single goal we have narrowed it down to a select few.
AFC Phoenix arrived at the Bev with only 8 players which gave us the head start before the game had even begun and it didn’t take long to get that first goal. On the 10th minute Louise Clarke broke down the right wing and slid a cross in along the edge of the 6 yard box, Kate Foster dummied the ball to find Melika Banton at the back post unmarked to slot the ball home. The 7th goal came from a Sharna Longville long all which found Louise Clarke on the left side of the box with the keeper closing her down, Lou hit the ball first time to find Kate Foster running through the middle to head the ball into the open goal. 30 seconds later came the 8th goal when straight from kick off Sharna won the ball in the centre circle and put a through ball to Bianca Underhill who was bombing down the right wing. Bianca run with the ball and was almost of the by line when she crossed/ shot (still arguable) which the keeper tried to catch but fumbled into her own net.
At 9-0 up at half time we knew that we just had to keep pressing and give the strong home crowd something to continue to cheer for, also showing the remaining teams in the competition that we mean business. The second half brought some spectacular goals to the game, our 11th goal on the 56th minute when Kerry Celino played the ball into the feet of Katie Foster who struck a sweet shot from 25 yards out which soared over the keepers head. The 13th goal came when Kerry Celino received the ball 18 yards out, after a whole game of trying to score Kerry struck the ball and finally got that wonder goal that she deserved. 4minutes later on the 70th minute there was a very similar goal when the ball fell the feet of Hayley Lyon who hit the ball first time from 20 yards out straight over the keeper’s outstretched arms. 16-0 up on the 80th minute and we could have been forgiven for sitting back and calling it a day but there was still time for one more goal. Captain Lisa went on a solo run down the right wing, she found herself almost on the base line when she chipped a ball into the box, the keeper attempted to catch it but fumbled it into her own net.
This was not a difficult game as it was 11 players Vs the 8 of AFC Phoenix however we did play some very promising football and scored some spectacular. With only 3 players on the team not scoring it shows that anyone in our side is able to score and we have a great dynamic team who is working hard. Next Sunday (19th April) we will face rivals Chobham Burymead away in the Cup Semi Final, we are hoping that a minibus will be taking supporters down to the game to give us that boost. This game brings a positive attitude ahead of next week’s game and being one step closer to another piece of silverware it makes us even hungrier to get our hands on it!
