Ladies team are Champions!
Ladies team win the League title with 2 games remaining!
Everyone who has been following the ladies team this season will have known that Sunday’s game was a big one for the team as only 1 point would have secured the title for them. The game was always going to be a very tight one as the opponents, Chobham Burymead, were second in the league and looking to spoil the Beavers parade. The sides met for the first time in the league only 2 weeks ago when the beavers came out on top by a narrow 3-2 win.
The Beavers were psyched up for this match with it in mind that a win or draw would put the league title firmly in their hands with 2 games still left to play. Over 100 spectators brought a great atmosphere to the Beveree from the off and both teams came out all guns blazing from the get go. Chobham put the pressure on early doors with some threatening attacks, but Hampton’s solid back line; Becky Payne, Allie Simmonds, Louise Harris and Kim Duffin and quick off the line Keeper Emma Marlow kept the score line at 0-0. In the first 30mins of the half it was a very end to end game made up with some solid midfield play and some skilful play down the wings. Chobham’s only chance of the half came on the 30th minute when a free kick was awarded to Chobham just outside the box. It was a great strike from the Chobham striker but was met by an equally great save from Emma Marlow to tip it round the post.
In the last 15minutes of the half Hampton really came into their own using Bianca Underhill and Louise Clarke well on the wings to create a number of opportunities narrowly missed by the attacking force of the midfield in Candice Hayward, Hayley Lyon and Lisa Traynor and lone striker Katie Foster. The solid first half left the score at 0-0 but with the Beavers confident that they could continue the great work that had followed in the last 15minutes of the first half.
The Beavers started to settle into the second half well keeping the ball under control and playing nice football on the floor. Hampton continued to use both wing well and put pressure on the Chobham back line. The Beavers break came on the 75th minute when a Hampton corner was crossed into the back post perfectly by Katie Foster. The ball was met perfectly by Louise Clarke who volleyed the ball straight into the back of the net, a super strike that anyone in the game would have been happy with. A well-deserved goal put the Beavers 1-0 up but knew that it was not the end of the game and they would need to continue to battle to the final whistle to get that all important win.
The Hampton defenders soaked up the pressure well with Chobham’s long ball play failing to part our solid back four. Substitutions Melika Banton, Sharna Longville and Kerry Celino gave some fresh legs in the middle and continued to make the game very hard for Chobham to play the ball around. In the final 10minutes of the game Chobham did manage to get a shot off on the edge of the box which looked as though it was creeping in just under the bar. With hearts in the mouths of all supporters and manager Leah Ambridge Emma Marlow managed to tip the ball onto the bar using only her fingertips. The ball fell into the 6 yard box where Emma collected the ball and cleared it only for a couple of minutes later the all-important final whistle.
Hampton had won 1-0 and also the League title with 2 league games still remaining. A fantastic all round performance with every player giving all their heart to the final whistle. On winning the league manager Leah Ambridge said:
“This is an unbelievable achievement for my ladies team. I am proud of every single one of them, they are my heroes. It’s been a great season and with cup games remaining our season is certainly not over yet! ”
