When the Boss is away the mice will play

Ladies team win again to go 9 points clear and only 1 win away from securing the league title!

With manager Leah away on her UEFA B course it was down to the Hampton 12 to travel to Surrey to face third place Godalming Town FC. Sitting 6 points clear at the top of the league and knowing second place Chobham were playing in a cup fixture this weekend we knew a win would take us 9 points clear putting us in a very good position ahead of the Chobham’s second tie next week.

In the windy conditions the game got off a slow start for the beavers as Godalming capitalised on a couple of Hampton mistakes and took the first chance of the day. The Godalming striker managed to find the space between the Hampton defenders to go 1 on 1 with keeper Emma Marlow but was not able to make Hampton pay as her shot was met by a save from Emma. This was the wakeup call that Hampton needed and started to play the good football which is the reason they are top of the league. The Hampton break came after 25minutes when some brilliant work down the right hand side saw Louise Clarke able to get a pass into Katie Foster just inside the Godalming penalty area. Kate managed to turn her defender and bury a left footed shot into the bottom corner putting the Beavers 1-0 up. The first half saw a number of opportunities just missing out on putting the Beavers further ahead but the 5 midfielders in Louise Clarke, Kerry Celino, Lisa Traynor, Hayley Lyon and Bianca Underhill were doing a sterling job on the attack and also covering in defence.

At half time the score saw the Beavers 1-0 and were confident that if they continued to play football on the floor and passing the ball around they could capitalise on the Godalming tiredness in the second half. Unfortunately Hampton didn’t get going quickly enough in the second half and Godalming scored the equaliser on the 50th minute. Another wakeup call came shortly after however Emma was on form and kept the Godalming attack at bay and keeping the score line level. This was definitely the wakeup call Hampton needed; defenders Becky Payne, Allie Simmonds, Louise Harris and Kim Duffin kept a brilliant line at the back, catching the Godalming strikers offside on a number of occasions. The second half saw the Hampton central midfielders using the ball well helping to create Hampton’s second of the game. The ball was played onto the left wing where Louise Clarke crossed the ball to find the head of Captain Lisa Traynor who flicked the ball onto Katie Foster who found herself in a couple of yards of space. There was no doubt in her mind at all, Kate slotted the ball into the net putting Hampton 2-1 up after 60minutes.

Hampton were beginning to come into their own with some great link up play down the left wing from Kim Duffin and Bianca Underhill opened up some space down the right hand side for the ball to be played square to Becky Payne and Louise Clarke opening up the Godalming central midfielders. Candice Hayward came off the subs bench to give some fresh legs in the middle of the park and allowed even more balls to be played out to the wings with great accuracy. Hampton’s third came on the 80th minute from another Louise Clarke cross from the left wing which found Bianca Underhill in the middle of the 6 yard box to strike the ball first time past the keeper. The game finished 3-1 to Hampton taking them 9 points clear at the top of the league.

This now means that a HOME win against Chobham next week will give the Ladies team the League title. It will be a very difficult game against a strong team but Hampton are confident and have the strength in the team to put up a good fight.

Despite Leah being away she was proud of the girls and said;
‘I would like to thank the team for the amazing efforts while I was on my course. They showed grit, determination, composure, teamwork and produced a great result. I am proud of every single one of my players and I believe in them to take the game to Chobham next week.’
