Ladies Team are giant killers for 2nd time in 4 games
H+R Ladies through to Quarter Final of the Cup after knocking out another high ranking side.
Sunday 1st Feb saw the Ladies team take to the wet field at Hurlingham Park to face Regents Park Rangers. Having beaten Enfield Town Res in the 2nd Round of the cup who were one division above H+R, the team now faced Regents Park who are currently two divisions above the Beavers, we all love an underdog anyway right?
Hampton came out fighting straight from the kick off showing that despite the gaps in the leagues, the Beavers were not frightened to take the match to the opponents. In the first half the shots were coming thick and fast with players having chances from all over the pitch. Hampton showed their class with some excellent football form the midfielders and striker, giving the opposition the run around for the majority of the first half. Shots from Katie Foster, Louise Clarke, Terri Harper, Lisa Traynor, Bianca Underhill and Hayley Lyon all came close but the Beavers just couldn’t get that decisive shot on goal.
On the 35th minute a cross from Bianca Underhill from the right wing found an unmarked Terri Harper in the box to tap it in and put the Beavers 1-0 up. Hampton were solid going forward and Regents Park had very little opportunity to get past the strong Hampton back line, the closest chance coming with a miss-hit back pass back to Emma Marlow (not naming any names!) was closed down by the Regents Park Striker but lines were cleared and no harm done to the score line.
1-0 up at Half time and Hampton were confident the score could have been 4-0 + and so were looking confidently into the second half to secure this win as the underdogs of this fixture. The second half was tough as pitch conditions in the Hampton half became worse and the wind became stronger. However this didn’t dampen the day and Hampton continued to play very good football on the floor and using their skill and teamwork to break down the opponents. Regents Park did have some more of the play in the 2nd half however any opportunities were met equally by Emma and the back four of Becky Payne, Emily Hogg, Louise Harris and Kim Duffin. Substitutions half way through the 2nd half saw new signings Sharna Longville and Melika Banton take the field along with Kerry Celino and Mel Telling.
The 2nd Hampton goal came from Sharna Longville who played a through ball across the box to an unmarked Melika Banton in the middle to slot the ball into the net and secure the Beavers Quarter Final place. At the end of the game Manager Leah Ambridge was pleased with the fight, grit and determination of the team. Hampton were not phased by their opponents higher league status and showed that the hard work the team are putting in is paying off.
Leah said; “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.' I believe that in our team we have this and this win only drives us on to keep working hard, progressing and being the best team we can be!”
