Sunday 12th saw Hampton ladies travel to South East London to face London Phoenix in their first meet of the season. The game started fairly slow with most of the play happening in the middle of the park. The first half saw Hampton and 3/4 chances with some free kicks and corners but were unable to make that final finish. Chances from Kee Kee and Lou Clarke caused some problems for the Phoenix back four with some brilliant shots which missed the target by minimal distance. Just before half time keeper Emma made a double save to ensure the Beavers went into half time all square.
Half time came with the score at 0-0 but with some tactical changes and a formation change from manager Leah Ambridge the Beavers were looking to control the 2nd half of the game. The break for the Beavers came only two mins into the 2nd half with Lou Harris playing the long ball down the right wing for Hayley to run onto. Reaching the ball before it went out of play the angle was tight however Hayley slotted the ball to the keepers right in a well placed finish, putting the beavers 1 up. Phoenix struggled with the sheer pace of Lou Clarke and she caused many issues for the back four. Lou’s break came on the 61st minute of the game by hitting a 18yard shot which flew into the top left corner lobbing the keeper.
After some brilliant training the Wednesday before the Beavers looked calmer on the ball playing from the back four up to the strikers in a controlled manner. Hampton’s back four were once again solid with any chances Phoenix thought they may have being shot down before they reached the 18 yard box. Hampton’s third came from our midfield captain Lisa. Much like last week Lisa hit a 20 yard screamer which lobbed the keeper and put a smile on everyone’s face as this was Lisa’s 2nd goal in so many games. Hampton continued to press but conceded a penalty on the 80th minute of the game, keeping calm Emma prepared herself for the penalty which was hit straight over the bar.
Manager Leah was pleased with the performance of the whole team and felt the team are fully prepared to face Denham United Reserves in the Capital One Junior Cup next Sunday.
