Beavers Wembley journey blocked by Stones
Beavers were beaten by a last gasp Maidstone Utd winner, who dodged a bullet at Beveree, Hampton being the better team for long periods.
It was not to be for the Beavers as the Stones enter the Trophy First round proper with a late Jay May winner, but the visitors were second best for a lot of the match as Hampton held the upper hand for long periods of the game.
The Beavers were the first to create a chance as defender Moussa Diarra managed to get on the end of a long free kick, but it flew straight at Lee Worgan in the visitors goal.
Midway through the half, Maidstone finally posed a threat as May drove forward from midfield but his shot from outside the area was well wide.
Josh Casey was busy on the wings and a half chance came late in the half, as he clipped in a cross to the near post which had to be bundled clear by the Maidstone defence, which was looking a bit unsure of themselves.
With half time seconds away, May managed to get on the end of a free kick but his header flew over the bar leaving the game in the balance.
The Stones came back into the match during the second half and just before the hour, a Bobby Joe Taylor free kick from 35 yards had to be acrobatically saved by keeper Mark Smith as it flew towards the top corner.
Despite the Beavers looking comfortable, and having the ball for long spells, the Stones were creating chances and Akrofi forced a smart save from Smith with about 15 minutes to go.
However, the Beavers couldn't get either a goal or a replay as a long ball into the box was headed back into the goalmouth by substitute Alex Flisher and May was on hand to stab the ball home past Smith and deny Hampton a replay at the Gallagher Stadium on Tuesday night.
