Beavers Beaten by Islanders
Deserved victory for the visitors
Canvey Island deservedly took the points in a poor match at Beveree Stadium, as they completed a league double over Hampton. The result keeps the Islander's playoff hopes alive, but for Hampton it is now three defeats in four league games.
Tommy Brewer was serving the first of a two match ban picked up for reaching ten yellow cards this season. This prompted a switch to three centre backs in the form of Darren Powell, Marcus Rose and Justyn Roberts. Joe Turner and George Wells adopted wingback roles. Stuart Lake was on the bench following his full ninety minutes against Hendon in Thursday's Middlesex Senior Cup Semi Final. Belal Aite-Ouakrim retained his place in the eleven after impressing at Earlsmead, while Dave Tarpey and Charlie Moone returned to lead the line. There was also a change between the sticks, with Luke Edgecombe replacing Rodney Chiweshe who was out of the country.
The visitors were the better team throughout, and Harrison Chatting brought a smart save out of Luke Edgecombe after twelve minutes, the goalkeeper getting down to his near post to repel the forward's shot. Chatting was one of three players to be introduced from the bench in the first half due to injuries sustained. Rio Bryan Edwards went close after eighteen minutes, but his header narrowly cleared the crossbar.
Hampton's first chance came after 21 minutes. A lovely ball from Tom Hickey set Charlie Moone clear down the right. He fizzed the ball into the penalty area. Tarpey dummied, but unfortunately the ball went behind Aite-Ouakrim. George Wells ran onto the loose ball, but fired his shot well over.
Edgecombe was again on hand to tip Sheldon Sellears' shot wide, but from the resulting corner Canvey took the lead. Rio Bryan Edwards' header was brilliantly clawed away by Edgecombe, but with the ball only partially cleared, Mike Jones fired in a fine half volley from twenty five yards that left the goalkeeper stranded. Early in the second period, Charlie Moone had the ball in the back of the net after being played through, but he was denied by the assistant's flag. However, Canvey scored their decisive second goal eleven minutes into the half. Harrison Chatting, played through by a superb pass, lifted the ball over Edgecombe. Despite getting a hand to the shot, he couldn't get enough on it to stop it going over the line.
There were a couple of late efforts from Hampton; Belal Aite-Ouakrim hit the bar with a shot from nothing with eleven minutes left, while Charlie Moone hit a shot into the side netting after good holdup play from Dave Tarpey. Aaron Wickham hit a tame shot straight at Canvey 'keeper Guzman in stoppage time.
Next up for the team is a home league match with Bury Town this coming Tuesday evening, kick off 7:45pm.
