Defensive Errors Cost Beavers
Two second half goals saw Leiston claim the points in a poor match at Beveree Stadium.
Leiston took the points in a game that in truth, neither team deserved to win. Two defensive lapses proved costly as the Suffolk side kept alive their playoff hopes. Stuart Lake was again suffering from the injury sustained against Northwood, so Tom Hickey returned to the lineup to take his place. Jack Barton again started on the right in place of Luke Wanadio, while Marcus Rose replaced Darren Powell in central defence.
Karle Carder was the first to have a goalbound effort, the Hampton midfielder's first minute volley tipped away well by Danny Gay. At the other end, a goalmouth scramble almost led to a lead for the visitors, but Rodney Chiweshe and his defence managed to clear the danger. Dave Tarpey and Charlie Moone then combined well, with Hampton's top scorer Moone bringing a good save from Gay, but it was goalless at the half.
Four minutes into the second half, Leiston had the lead. Rhys Henry slipped a good ball through a non existent defense to Joe Francis, and the winger coolly slotted the ball under Chiweshe. Tarpey almost levelled immediately, but Gay saved his deflected shot well.
Hampton's task was made all the more difficult when they were reduced to ten men on the hour. Ben Harris - who had only been on the pitch for four minutes after replacing Jack Barton - flew into a late challenge that caught a Leiston defender just below the knee. The striker had not heard the referee's whistle for an injury to Carder, making the red card that bit harder to digest.
Dave Tarpey looked the most likely option of a route back into the game for the Beavers, but he lifted a shot onto the roof of the net after battling past a defender and the keeper. In the first minute of stoppage time, Leon Ottley-Gooch dispossessed Karle Carder and easily beat Chiweshe with his shot to seal the points.
The visitors will probably say they got a deserved win, but in all honesty a draw was no more than either side deserved. The Beavers are at home again this coming Tuesday, as AFC Hornchurch come to town.
