Kretzschmar the saviour as Hampton nick the win

Step up in second half performance the key to victory as Beavers extend unbeaten run further

Max Kretzschmar's 60th minute header proved to be the winner at Priory Lane against Eastbourne Borough but the Beavers needed some strong words from the management at half time to lift them.

Hampton were just starting to impose themselves on the match when they were caught out in the 8th minute by a very quick Sports counter attack after a corner in the home penalty area broke down. The ball was quickly played up to Lloyd Dawes; the number 10 then sprinted past the cover of Christian Jolley, held off the frantically chasing blue and white shirts to slip the ball past Manny Agboola from 12 yards.

The Beavers came tried to come back and just 5 minutes later, Josh Casey's free kick was tipped onto the bar by former Beaver Mark Smith; however, the officials decided it was a goal kick.

The Sports were holding firm and despite the Beavers best efforts, it took until about 10 minutes before the break for the next chance; Shandon Baptiste's shot from about 10 yards out being deflected wide.

Hampton finally got the equaliser right on the stroke of half time. After some good work on the Hampton right, Kretzschmar found Brendan Kiernan in the box and his cross was met acrobatically by Elliott Charles. The striker's shot looked to have been pawed away by Smith, before Charlie Wassmer chased in and lashed the ball into the net.

Dowse, Ian Dyer and Martin Tyler obviously had had strong words in the dressing room at half time and the effort was stepped up, Taurean Roberts' early chance from a rebound went high and wide.

A couple of minutes after, the Sports created a good chance of their own as Udoji fired in a rocket from 25 yards that Manny Agboola had to parry at his near post out for a corner.

On the hour, Hampton finally took the lead as Kretzschmar rose to meet Brendan Kiernan's cross from the far side and flick the ball past Smith into the net.

A couple of minutes later, it looked as if Michael Kamara had got the third from close range, but it was immediately ruled out for offside, to the home fans relief.

Wassmer could have had his second of the day with 15 minutes to go, but his shot from Krezschmar's free kick was comfortably saved by Smith.

Deep in injury time, Agboola had to preserve the win as he had to block Odubale's point-blank header but he stood tall and parried it away to safety as the Beavers saw the game out and as a result, jumped up to second place in the National League South table.

Speaking after the game, assistant manager Ian Dyer said "We weren't at the desired standard (in the first half), we didn't just want the draw, we want to win and climb the table; the second-half was fantastic and we deserved the win in the end."
