Beavers held by poor Stones

Despite having the better of the game, Hampton had to settle for a point against Wealdstone

In a match that might still yet have a bearing on the playoffs, Hampton and Wealdstone fought out a tense draw at Beveree.

Hampton had a lot of the early possession with Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick's header forcing a smart tip-over from Stones keeper Jonathan North proving to be the best of the early chances.

It wasn't long before that pressure was rewarded and the Beavers eventually took the lead on 25 minutes with a great strike.

Christian Jolley won the ball from Stones captain Sam Cox and struck a fine half volley from 25 yards which North could do nothing about as it sailed into the top corner.

5 minutes later, Duncan Culley had the ball in the net but the assistant on the far side, surprisingly deemed it offside and so it was ruled out.

The Stones had their best chance 10 mins before the break with a header from Tom Hamblin but the powerful header went well wide.

The Beavers nearly made it two-nil straight after the break as Brendan Kiernan beat the offside trap to latch onto Christian Jolley's chipped pass. North came rushing out to try and distract Kiernan. Brendan's lob beat North's leap but it was just too strong and landed on the roof of the net.

Wealdstone got back into the game almost immediately afterwards from one of their very few chances on goal, Dan Green's cross was met by Ciaron Brown whose flicked header beat Howes into the bottom corner.

The Stones kept pressing, without forcing a save from Howes, despite plenty of pressure but the Beavers had two great chance with 10 mins to go.

Firstly Joe Hicks' header was only just wide after he ghosted in to meet a cross then Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick broke through on goal, forcing a save from North, who was comfortably the Stones best player on the day.

Speaking today, Alan Dowson was puzzled by the reaction that it was a fair result.

"I don't know what game they were watching as I thought we were much the better side overall."

"Sam Howes hasn't had a proper shot to save, and about all he's done is pick the ball out of the net."

"We've had three or four good chances to win it and we should have."

"We'll go again tomorrow at Dartford but given the injuries from yesterday, we could be a bit light. However, as always, we'll all give it our best shot, no matter what the team I select."
