Awayday Blues for Beavers
By Rob Overfield
The Beavers finally lost their first match on their travels this season but the performance wasn't all it could have been.
Dowse was without captain Kieran Murphy due to illness so Eddie Hutchinson stepped in; Jerome Federico was unavailable for the journey to Suffolk.
A quiet first 15 minutes saw neither side even get close to troubling respective keepers; on 17 minutes, Leiston's John Sands latched onto a flicked header but his shot was scuffed and bounced right at Seb Brown.
The Beavers were looking a little short of the spark they'd shown in recent weeks and on 34 minutes, they took the lead and the scorer wasn't even sure he'd scored!
Richard Pacquette played a neat ball down the right to free Charlie Moone; his shot from the angle of the box was blocked by keeper Ashlee Jones and then somehow the Beavers were celebrating the goal.
It turned out the save had hit a Leiston defender, rolled across goal and Nicke Kabamba, in sliding to force the ball home, had ended up rolling the ball over the line while pretty much sitting on it. Not one that'll end up on a Goal of the Month package but it was a goal and the Beavers weren't too bothered how it came about.
5 minutes later, the hosts nearly equalised as a neat passing movement had let in Sands; his right foot shot needed Seb Brown to dive full length and touch the ball wide of the post.
The second half saw Hampton's position crumble as Leiston took advantage of some poor play from the Beavers.
10 minutes into the half, a cross from the Blues wasn't cleared quite far enough; it came back immediately and Gareth Heath was on hand to nod home past Brown in a crowded box.
5 minutes later, the Blues were in the lead, and in truth, it was gifted to them. A cross from the left ended up in the Beavers 6 yard box, Seb Brown was unable to hold on to it despite little pressure and Joe Francis just had to prod home from close range.
Leiston were content at this point to take the points as the Beavers were struggling to create anything clear cut despite the introduction of Rose and Newman.
Hampton looked to have at least retrieved themselves a point as Moussa Diarra got up to meet a Dean Sinclair cross but Jones was on hand to palm the ball over the bar.
Added time was nearly over as Leiston countered quickly, Gareth Heath was able to beat the offside trap and fire past Brown from 15 yards to seal a win that flattered them a little.
