Hicks red derails Beavers
By Rob Overfield
The Beavers had to fight for an hour with just 10 men after Joe Hicks 30th minute red card and in the end, Lewes were just too much for the Beavers.
The Beavers started brightly and in the 8th minute, should have opened the scoring. Jerome Federico charged down the right wing, and on getting to the line, pulled the ball back into the box. Nicke Kabamba arrived on the end of the cross with the goal at his mercy, but somehow he managed to slip it wide. A missed chance that would cost the Beavers.
On the half hour, the game was wrenched from the Beavers grasp, just as they were starting make headway. A long ball over the middle was chased by Hicks and Nathan Crabb; the striker just got a toe end on the ball before Hicks' tackle brought him down on the edge of the area with only Pierson to beat. The referee immediately brandished the red card.
Matte Pierson managed to block the free kick but the rebound eventually fell to veteran Jay Lovett, who made no mistake from the angle.
The Beavers reshuffled the defence, but 5 minutes later, could've equalised. Kabamba chased down the defence and managed to win a challenge on keeper Tsanev; the ball spun up in the air, and the striker tried to half volley it home, but the spin on the ball took it high and wide over the bar. Hampton were never to get that close again.
The task got harder for the Beavers on 55 minutes as a corner wasn't cleared far enough, and Lovett had time to control the ball and to tee up a crisp shot past a stranded Pierson to give the Rooks their second.
Lewes grew in confidence and from here on in the Beavers were under pressure for most of the game; it seemed only a matter of time before more goals were scored by the visitors.
On 77 minutes, Leon Redwood extended the lead as he fired home after picking up a ricochet on the edge of the box and the game was well and truly gone from the Beavers.
Lewes finished the evening off with a flourish as Richie Welch made a mazy run through the middle, his shot was blocked but it fell to Troy Williams. He was able to slot his shot past Pierson to make it as bad a night for the Beavers as the one exactly 12 months previously vs Leiston...
