Michael sinks Rocks for the win
By Rob Overfield
The Beavers finally picked up that first win with a hard fought victory over a physical East Thurrock side.
The Rocks stunned their hosts in the 2nd minute with a lofted ball between Eddie Hutchinson and Moussa Diarra which found captain Sam Higgins between them; the striker was in enough room to half volley the ball past keeper Seb Brown and into the corner of the net.
Neither side was creating the chances the possession warrented and it wasn't until 26 minutes that the Beavers got back on terms. Nicke Kabamba latched onto a Richard Pacquette flick from Brown's long kick to rifle the ball under Rocks keeper Lukas Lidakevicuis from 12 yards out which the keeper got a touch on but couldn't stop.
The Beavers made it two ten minutes later. East Thurrock's Sammy Knott was booked for a second foul on Hampton's Jerome Federico, who was giving the full back a torrid time with searing pace; the free kick into the goal mouth from Ryan Newman was knocked down by Diarra and Michael Kamara bundled the ball home from close range.
In the early moments of the second half, East Thurrock's Lewis Smith received a booking for pushing Josh Casey hard to the floor as the midfielder prevented Casey from retrieving the ball from beside the fence in front of the press box. After consultation with his assistant, the referee decided on the lesser sanction.
Neither side worried the keeper in the early minutes of the second period until Kabamba skied over from close range on 57 minutes.
On the hour, Jerome Federico sprinted to the bye line, causing all kinds of trouble on the flanks; his cross was met by a sliding Pacquette at the back post, but his slide was too soon and Lidakevicuis was able to gather.
The Beavers were in charge for a lot of the second half, but on 84 minutes, a Rickie Hayles header at the back post caused a moments palpitations but Seb Brown stood up and blocked the header and the Beavers cleared their lines and the danger passed.
5 minutes were left when the Rocks won a free kick midway inside the half; in the jostling before the kick, Dean Sinclair fell to the ground. The referee decided that Kris Newby had used his elbow in trying to push off the Beavers midfielder and sent the defender from the field.
The Beavers could have finished the match with a third goal in the long period of added time as Kabamba played through Dan Thompson with the keeper stranded, but East Thurrock's Tom Anderson managed to get a desperate challenge in to take the ball off Thompson's toe and prevent the striker from scoring his first of the season.
