Beavers outgunned by Karagiannis
The Beavers were outdone in the final third, by a Tanners team that looked in decent shape; but the result was not as bad as the scoreline suggests.
The team welcomed new signings Zack Reynolds and Kevant Serbony into the midfield, starting with a 4-4-1-1 formation on a heavy pitch that meant the game was in doubt until about 1-35pm.
The Tanners were the first to create a meaningful chance as Vasileilos Karagiannis dragged a shot from the left of the box wide of the right hand upright but the Beavers got a more direct warning just after the half hour. Kiernan Hughes-Mason cut in from the right and fired off a shot from 15 yards that rattled Mark Smith's left hand post with the young keeper helpless.
With 7 minutes to go before half time, the Tanners took the lead. A free kick from the Beavers left flicked off a red shirted head, and flew to the back post where Carl Rook was lurking to beat the defence and head home from close range.
The lead was short lived for the hosts as Charlie Moone managed to wriggle though three or four challenges in the box, the ball staying close to his feet and he managed to slip the ball past keeper Louis Wells from close range to level the scores.
The Tanners were stung by this and with added time just starting, a Karagiannis free kick dipped over the wall sufficiently for Mark Smith to tip the ball over the bar.
The second half started more promisingly for the Beavers as a cheeky shot from Moone just missed the post, after some good work by James Simmonds down the right.
However, the Tanners took the lead on 53 minutes, a little against the run of play, as Karagiannis' accurate shot from the edge of the box gave Smith no chance, leaving the Beavers looking down the barrel.
Once again, the introduction of Jerome Federico added some spirit to the Beavers play; played in by James Simmonds, his shot to the near post had to be tipped wide by keeper Wells.
Tom Collins' introduction a few minutes previously had given the Beavers further options and the forwards' shot from a tight angle left Tanners keeper Wells worried as it flew across goal, ultimately drifting wide.
The Tanners were a little pushed now as the Beavers started to make further chances. Charlie Moone's shot held up in the goalmouth mud after picking up a deflection following a Federico pass - the pacey winger found plenty of space to pass from as Serbony's back heel wrong footed the cover - but the ball dribbled wide of the post.
It was effectively game over on 81 minutes as Karagiannis managed to finish off a neat, fluent passing move in the Beavers defensive corner from close range, sidefooting past Smith.
However, the Beavers kept pressing; first Moone brought a smart save from Louis Wells, then deep in added time, Jerome Federico beat Wells with a clever shot from the right, but one of the Tanner's defensive cover managed to get back to hack the ball away from close to the goal line.
The Beavers played better than the scoreline suggested, being undone by some confident finishing from Karagiannis, and deserved a point. Hopefully the friendly on Tuesday night will enable them to restore some confidence.
