Beavers close door on Margate
The Beavers put aside their disappointing display on Tuesday to beat a very lacklustre Margate side comfortably and confirm Dowse's prematch forecast.
Lining up with an attacking 11, the Beavers were nearly caught in the first few seconds as Luke Moore found himself in plenty of space down the right, but his shot was well wide.
Hampton then took control and for long periods during the first period, were in control.
On 13 minutes, Kieran Murphy's header across the box fell to Nick Bignall, his shot taking a deflection to loop over the bar.
The Gate were struggling at times with the Beavers tempo and on 27 minutes, they nearly paid the price as Ben Harris's pass inside gave the striker a great chance. Moone, showing great skill, beat defenders before firing a shot at goal, but Nikki Bull was in the right position and it was a comfortable save.
Murphy was proving a thorn in the Margate defence as he was creating chances from set pieces through headers back across goal; on 35 minutes his flicked header went wide of the post and then he met a near post flick at the back post but his header was off target.
Seconds before the halftime interval, the Beavers got their just reward for the possession and pressure. Ben Harris played a great ball into the midfield for Moone, who advanced to the edge of the box and rifled it past a flat-footed Bull into the corner of the net.
With Terry Brown's half time team talk fresh in their minds, Margate came out much brighter in the second half and began to show why they are top of the league.
Just before the hour, Lewis Taylor's flicked shot with the outside of his boot had Mark Smith back pedalling to tip the ball over for a corner; from that corner, Brett Johnson's header rebounded off the bar to be eventually clear by the Beavers.
Charlie Wassmer and Taylor had further chances for the Gate before the Beavers steadied the ship and sealed the points in the 82nd minute. Jake Rose pressured Tambeson Eyong into misplacing his pass which Luke Wanadio pounced on, and then fed the inch perfect pass to Nick Bignall, running into space. Bignall composed himself and left Bull stranded as his shot arrowed into the bottom corner.
A well deserved win for the Beavers against a good side. Next Saturday they will look to build on the win as they travel to Wingate & Finchley.
