Two late headers secure a comeback victory for Canvey Island
A brilliant freekick from Jake Rose was not enough for Dowse's side, as headers from central defenders Mike Jones and Rio Bryan-Edwards sealed the points for the visitors.
With Duncan Culley absent through illness, Nicholas Bignall was handed a starting berth in attack alongside Charlie Moone. However, it was Canvey Island who had the early efforts on goal, with Mike Jones firing over after two minutes, and Ishmail Kamara curling a shot straight into Mark Smith's arms. The first clear cut opportunity also fell to the visitors, when Harrison Chatting pounced on a bit of miscontrol from George Wells. With Smith rushing out to meet him, Chatting lifted the ball goalwards, only to see it clip the bar and bounce to saftey.
It wasn't until the midway point of the first half that Hampton registered a shot on goal, Jake Rose's shot taking a deflection which saw the midfielder's effort loop onto the roof of the net. This sparked a succession of corners, the first of which led to a shot from Saheed Sankoh being deflected inches wide. The second corner was tipped over by Canvey 'keeper Tim Brown, but the third came to nothing.
Charlie Moone and Nicholas Bignall were combining well, and from one such linkup almost provided the opening goal. Charlie flicked a header into the path of Bignall, and he drove forward before cutting in onto his favoured left foot and striking a twenty yarder wide. Ola Williams - filling in at right back - then showed his attacking potential by fizzing a left foot curler narrowly over Brown's bar.
Four minutes before the break, though, and Hampton got the breakthrough. Charlie Moone was running across the edge of the Canvey area but had his heels clipped. From the freekick, Jake Rose curled a beauty of a right foot shot into the bottom corner. Brown got a good hand to the shot but couldn't keep it out, and Beavers had the lead at the break. The goal can be viewed in the gallery at the top of the report. (Video and pictures courtesy of James Bartaby) HT Beavers 1 Gulls 0
Bignall had the first couple of efforts in a slow starting second half, the first a horrible sliced effort after a great pass from George Wells. The second, however, saw him smash a thunderous drive off the crossbar after brilliantly controlling a long ball forward and racing into a shooting position. It would have been a cracking goal, but unfortunately that crossbar will probably still be shaking when we kickoff against Margate this Saturday!
Twelve minutes from time, and the wheels came off. A swift counter attack saw brilliant forward play from Canvey substitute Victor Osobu, as he got a clearance under control before holding onto the ball while support caught up. He was then able to play in fellow sub Anthony Thomas on the right, and his cross was met by a thumping header from Mike Jones to bring matters level. And with three minutes remaining, Canvey Island took all three points as Rio Bryan-Edwards headed in a deep up-and-under cross at the back post. It was a harsh blow for Dowse's boys, as a draw would have been a fair result.
Still, onwards and upwards. Saturday sees promotion chasers Margate visit Beveree. The game will kick off at 3pm. Come down and show your support.
