Beavers leathered by Tanners
Hampton's recent run of good form was blown away as a pacy Leatherhead team cut them to ribbons at Beveree.
Right from the start, the Tanners were on top, and they took the lead on 10 minutes with a massive slice of luck. Jack Norton came dashing out to clear a long ball over the top, with Hughes-Mason chasing. Unfortunately Norton misjudged his acrobatic clearing kick, the ball slicing off the top of his foot and behind him, leaving the midfielder with the easiest of tap ins from a few yards.
The Beavers were finding it tough to match their visitors, but just a few minutes later, they snatched an equaliser with their own piece of fortune. Tommy Brewer's pass forward found Charlie Moone in what looked like an offside position, but the assistant's flag stayed down, and Moone rifled the shot across Louis Wells, flying just inside the far post to make it 1-1.
The level scoreline didn't last as on 24 minutes, Paul Semakula slid home the rebound from Hughes-Mason's shot after his rampaging run down the right, leaving left back George Wells for pace.
It was looking a stiff climb back for the Beavers at this point but on 33 minutes, the Tanners pretty much made it a vertical effort as Vas Karagiannis picked up a Norton punch-out from Dembele's shot, and from the corner of the box, he bulleted a cross shot across goal to go in off the post.
After half time, the Beavers were striving to get back into the match but on 56 minutes, they were struck down by an outrageous Stacy Long free kick. Some 35 yards up the field and by the touch-line, the visitors won the free kick, and Long took it quickly as he'd spotted Norton was not quite in position. Not a cross to be defended from the midfielder, but an accurately struck attempt on goal that beat Norton for pace, leaving the keeper to pick the ball out of the net, looking a little embarrassed.
The Beavers were striving to get at least one goal back, and with just over 10 minutes left, they created their best chance of the half. Ben Osman's shot from the edge of the box took a wicked upwards deflection, and chasing in, Karle Carder's close range header was palmed clear for a corner.
Leatherhead almost buried the game on 83 minutes, as Jack Norton was left stretching and reaching for Long's delicate lob. In doing so, the ball fell from his grasp and rolled outside of the post.
The Tanners wound up the game in added time, with Carl Rook's penalty making it 5; Moussa Diarra was adjudged to have made contact with the ball as he attempted to steady himself by putting his hand down as he fell backwards, it almost landing on the ball.
It was not a result to please Alan Dowson, given recent wins, and its hoped the team can gather itself together for Saturday's trip to Tonbridge or else it might be a trickier tie than it need be.
