Wanadio wins it for Beavers
A tough match at Bridge Avenue saw the Beavers hold on to win through Luke Wanadio's well-struck free kick.
The Beavers continued their upswing of improvement under Dowse as they just did enough to beat AFC Hornchurch in a poor game at Bridge Avenue, which saw the Urchins reduced to 10 men just before halftime, George Purcell being dismissed for an off the ball incident.
Dowse made just one chance, with Thomas Opoku returning at right back in place of Kieran Murphy.
Both teams took time to get moving as defences were clearly on top, with the closest either side coming to a goal was when Curley put his shot over the bar.
The Urchins were made to pay for that as in the 27th minute, the Beavers won a free kick about 10 yards outside the area.
Tommy Brewer and Luke Wanadio stood over the ball, deciding who was to take it. Brewer played a short pass to his right, Wanadio controlled the ball and then struck an accurate shot into the net past Mott’s right hand
The Beavers appeared content to absorb the Urchins best efforts, as Purcell headed wide on the half hour and the same striker had a shot deflected wide with just 4 minutes to the break.
As the half time break beckoned, one of the assistants was seen to flag furiously. The referee stopped the game and then, following a consultation, got out his cards, flashed the red, and sent the striker from the field.
After the game, Dowse thought the sending off made little difference to the game, and in truth, the second half was much of the same as Hornchurch squandered 2 chances from Tuohy in the early part of the period, before the same player then hit the post and Johnson fired it wide.
The match then proceeded to drift away for both sides as the Beavers were appeared happy with the score as the hosts never really got near enough to threaten Jack Norton’s goal, even though 7 minutes of added time were played.
