Another Gray(s) day for Beavers
The Beavers suffered their 5th straight defeat as Grays Athletic became the 3rd team to crash 4 past Hampton & Richmond at Beveree this season.
Grays opened the scoring on 21 minutes after a nondescript start to the game. A free kick from the right of midfield found Jay Leader unmarked at the back post, his header from close range gave debutant keeper Jack Norton no chance.
Tommy Brewer picked up a painful knock just after the goal and had to be subsituted, and will possibly now be a doubt for the game against the Met Police.
Neither team looked blessed with confidence, much of the game played in the middle third but on 33 minutes, Joao Carlos managed to get through the defense and fired in a shot from close range, which Norton saved. Despite the conceded goal, the Beavers nearly got back into the game as Charlie Moone found himself on the end of a chipped ball in, but keeper Conor Gough blocked the shot at close range.
Once again, the second half was ultimately the Beavers undoing as it so often has at home this season. On 50 minutes, though, George Wells took a quick free kick from about 25 yards, Gough having to push the shot wide, despite having to cover most of his goal line to do so.
The game was taken out of the Beavers reach as on 65 minutes, Grays extended their lead. Joao Carlos pinged in a cross from the left bye-line, and Jamie Guy flicked it deftly past Norton at the near post.
New signing Norton had to be alert on 73 minutes as Jamie Guy broke through on goal, his diving save with his legs proved to be enough.
The Beavers hadn't completely given up, as substitute Jesse Kewley-Graham timed his move perfectly to pick up a little dinked pass by Karle Carder in the box; his dummy wrong-footed Gough but the ball ran away from him out for a goal kick.
Grays made it 3-0 as Lloyd Harrington got the last touch from close range in a goalmouth scramble with 7 minutes left and insult was added to the hurt for the Beavers in added time, as captain Billy Jeffreys inadvertently diverted a Joe Benjamin cross past Norton from close range.
