Dowse happy with first runout

Beavers matched Thistle in behind closed doors test

By Richard Parsons

MANAGER Alan Dowson was all smiles after an encouraging opening display from the Beavers on Wednesday night as they held Partick Thistle, of the Scottish Premiership, to a 0-0 draw at their training base in Essex.

The match was played on an impressively smooth training surface beside the golf course at Five Lakes country club and spa, near Tiptree, where the Jags have been preparing for the new season.

The fixture came about through a contact of chairman Graham Wood. Thistle originally wanted to play on this date at The Beveree, but our pitch is not yet ready.

Dowse was delighted with the discipline shown by his players, who inevitably had to defend in their own half for a large part of the game as The Jags pressed them.

However, the Beavers also gave their opponents something to think about on occasions and were unlucky in the second half when Ryan Moss hit the post after a neat turn and shot.

Thistle had a couple of chances in goalmouth scrambles, while Billy Bishop made an important block late on to keep the scores level.

Dowse said: “This was a great opportunity to take on a quality side, but it came early for us. We haven’t even had a chance to work on corners and free-kicks yet, but overall I was very pleased.”

He fielded separate teams in each half, with a number of triallists given the chance to impress. One he picked out was right-winger Taurean Roberts, who was at Tooting & Mitcham last season.
Roberts featured in the second half and gave his markers a difficult time, as well as impressing the manager with his determination to track back and cover.

The Beavers welcomed back Brendan Kiernan, who has yet to train with the team after weighing up his options in the close season. He has yet to sign, but that looks a lot closer now.

Newcomers to catch the eye included Max Kretschmer, from Woking, and Claudio Viciu, a giant centre-half who has signed from Wingate & Finchley.

First half team: John Henly (triallist); Tom Jelley, Michael Kamara, Charlie Wassmer, Josh Casey (Capt), Sam Gallagher, Brendan Kiernan, Harry Crawford, Max Kretschmer, Chinua Cole (triallist), Duncan Culley.

Second half: Billy Bishop; Nathan Collier (capt), Caludio Viciu, Ryan Bray, Chris Onupriou, Taurean Roberts, Sean McAuley (all triallists), Christian Jolley, Jerry Amoss, Adam Francis (both triallists) and Ryan Moss.
