Beavers Hit Baggies For Five
Blazing sunshine and the nearby Farnborough Air Show provide the backdrop for a good display
For the second time in a week, Beavers hit five past lower league opponents to continue their preseason campaign. However, unlike against Corinthian Casuals, this time we had to come from a goal down.
After just eighty seconds, Badshot Lea were in front after a rather tame freekick found its way past Luke Edgecombe. James Simmonds almost fired in his own freekick after five minutes, but it was saved.
Paris Mason had a good chance on ten minutes, the ball breaking to him in the penalty area. He managed to evade the Baggies' keeper, but his shot was comfortably cleared from danger. Paul and Darren were forced into an early change, with James Richmond being forced off with injury. He was replaced in defence by Max Hustwick.
Hampton levelled midway through the first half, when Gareth Chendlik slotted home after a good attack down the left through Luke Wanadio and Ben Osman. Three minutes later, Charlie Moone was inches away from a spectacular goal, but his lob was met with an equally brilliant save. Charlie then rose to meet a Simmo freekick, but his brilliant header cannoned back off the bar.
The chances kept coming, with Chendlik putting an overhead kick narrowly wide, and Hustwick heading wide from a corner. The deserved lead did come right on half time, however, and it was Charlie Moone who got it. He turned his defender brilliantly before slotting the ball through the goalkeeper's legs.
The second half started with two goals in the first nine minutes. First, Badshot Lea equalised with a good run and finish, before Paris Mason restored our lead with a thumping finish from close range. The game wilted a bit after that, due in equal part to the heat and multiple substitutions. One of the players coming on, though, was Ben Harris, and he netted a brace in the final three minutes.
For his first, he got up after being fouled and curled the freekick past the goalkeeper's despairing dive. His second was a calm finish slotted in from the edge of the penalty area.
Next up for the lads is a home clash with a Swansea City XI at Beveree on Tuesday evening.
