The best way to keep up to date with Hampton & Richmond Borough FC

As originally in the Eastbourne Borough programme...

I guess, like most of us, I always look out for a good deal, something that offers value for money. Well, according to the president of PSG, Neymar will prove to be a real snip at £197m!!

The current transfer window will remain open for another three weeks, but so far the fees that are being paid for “good” players are what clubs would have expected to pay for “exceptional” ones not so long ago. The finances of the football world seem completely at odds with the rest of society. Surely, transfer fees and wages cannot be sustainable at the current levels without there being some long term consequences for the game.

Businesses and families alike are having to watch what they spend, whilst the football clubs are spending money like water. When I was growing up; football was a game for the working classes. An ordinary working man, like my dad, could afford to take his two boys to a top flight game most Saturdays, whereas today; it is often seen as a real treat.

Thank goodness for teams like H&RBFC, where a family can still enjoy a game without having to break the bank. At Beveree, the club struggles, like most families, to meet its financial commitments. We rely heavily on the board of directors digging into their own pockets to help keep the club going.

I am sure most of our supporters know by now that Graham Wood has taken up the chairman’s reins again and Jacques le Bars (Alan Simpson’s Godson) is his vice chairman. A big thank you for being willing to help back the club financially.

I know that many of our fans also help to support the clubs coffers, by being part of the 200 club, a member of the supporters trust, or contributing to the - “boost the budget scheme”. Even by buying a burger or a pint; you are putting money in the pot.

If the price for the services of a footballer is close to £200m, plus wages of more than £500k per week for the next five years, what price would you put on “eternal life”? In one sense it is priceless, in another it is absolutely free!!

Jesus paid the price in full, when he took the sins of the world on his shoulders as he hung on the cross at Calvary. Eternal life is then offered as a free gift to all those who accept Jesus as the saviour with the bottomless pockets!!

Let’s hope for another exciting season. Get behind the Dowse and the lads and support the club in whatever way you can.
