IT has now been three weeks since Graham Wood announced he was officially stepping down from his role as chairman of the football club and handing the reins over to me.
The last two years under Graham’s stewardship has seen a huge amount of change at the club, probably the majority of which goes unseen by most people as, in the main, it concerns the infrastructure and processes behind the scenes.
A lot of the changes and improvements were long overdue and, while this obviously doesn’t translate directly to the pitch (play-offs aside!), they have been essential to ensure the club can continue to operate at this level of football, today and going forward.
We therefore have a lot to thank Graham for, not only for the past two years, but also for everything he has done for the club since the 1960s, when he first became involved. In recognition of this, I recently asked Graham whether he would be willing to take over the role of club president, something very important to me as it was previously my godfather Alan Simpson who occupied this role for many years.
I could not think of a better candidate to replace Alan and I am delighted to say Graham has accepted the offer. So, I would like to now welcome him back to the club as the President of Hampton and Richmond Borough FC. I hope all of our fans will do the same next time they see him at the Jezzards Beveree!
It is now my responsibility, along with the other members of the board, to continue the good work of the last couple of years and, as Graham alluded to in his leaving statement, we have now appointed Ben Hudson as the new vice-chairman.
Ben brings with him a wealth of experience both in business and sporting environments and has already started some beneficial work for the club behind the scenes. I’d like to officially welcome him and I’m sure he will prove to be a fantastic asset to the club.
As well as Ben’s appointment we have already extended Gary’s contract. Despite the budget challenges he faces, some very exciting signings are already being made. There will be more to come in the near future and, with other great developments taking shape off the pitch, I am really looking forward to the new season!
