FA Trophy Beavers very HandY at Beveree.
The Beavers extended their winning run to 4 games (in all competitions) by winning this FA Trophy 1st round game against a lifeless Hayes & Yeading team that couldn't force a proper save from Craig Ross until the dying minutes of the game, despite the Beavers having makeshift backs in place from the start writes Rob Overfield.
Manager Mark Harper recalled Matt Ruby, Karle Andrews, James Simmonds, Dave Tarpey and Joel Ledgister into the starting 11, replacing Billy Jeffreys, Tom Hickey, Aaron Morgan, Dan Thompson and Charlie Moone. Lewis Ferrell's suspension following his dismissal at Bromley kicked in, so Nathan Collier deputised at right back. All of the five making way made up the Beavers bench.
After an impeccable minutes silence for Bob Morford, the match turned out to be quite humdrum for the first 20 minutes or so; the only significant action being the withdrawal of Paul Johnson on 17 minutes though an unknown injury, Tom Hickey came on to take on an unfamiliar position at left back.
It was Hickey that first troubled the goal on 25 minutes as he beat two defenders on his way into the box, but his curling shot was wide of a full stretch Beasant in the H&Y goal. The visitors raised the temperature of the home fans, as first Argent and then Williams were both cautioned for reckless tackles that on other days might have seen a vibrant shade of card shown by referee David Rock.
The last 15 minutes saw the visitors come back into the game but weak and inaccurate finishing from Ajala, Dubois twice and Collins put the Hampton goal in very little danger.
HT 0-0
Hayes & Yeading continued to have the balance of the possession without creating any real threats before Dave Tarpey continued his rich vein of form in front of goal, converting a James Simmonds' pass while holding off two defenders, after Simmonds had won the ball in midfield.
Hayes & Yeading battled back and 7 minutes later, Dubois finished with a crisp volley that was ruled out by the assistant's welcome offside decision.
4 minutes alter, the games was effectively over as Louie-Rae Beadle made a powerful run down the right, his cross was met by James Simmonds but Beasants save fell just right for Tarpey who buried it for his fifth goal in Trophy games this season, and his 11th to date.
From here on, the Beavers were in the ascendancy. With just 12 minutes left, Tarpey's attempt for his second hat-trick in the FA Trophy was just too high after being set up smartly by Josh Huggins. Tarpey had a second opportunity just a couple of minutes later, as he broke through to challenge Beasant for the ball, but he couldn't get the shot on target, and in the subsequent collision, bruised his kneecap.
Dubois finally managed to force a proper save out of Ross with just 6 minutes to go, as he was set up by Williams and Bettamer's interplay, Ross managed to beat away the shot to safety, but that was it for the game.
