Mark Harper’s men beat Ryman Premier side Canvey Island 4-2 in the third round of the FA Trophy thanks to a first-class performance by Nathan Collier.
Collier spoon-fed his fellow strikers with precise passes throughout the match and set the tone on four minutes when assisting Dave Tarpey who coolly placed the ball in the bottom left corner.
Sutton had given loanee Joel Ledgister the go ahead and he had two early chances to make it 2-0 but was denied by Canvey’s keeper who made himself big in a one-on-one before tipping the next effort over the bar.
Collier then delivered a flurry of crosses into the box. A wide finish by Tarpey was sandwiched between two Ledgister misses and the striker was lucky to escape a booking when kicking the ball away in frustration.
Canvey came close to levelling before half-time but Jason Halett saw his effort fly just outside the near post.
Hampton started the second half with a goal straight from the training ground. Collier gave the ball to Tarpey on the right who drove forward before returning it to Collier who deservedly got himself on the scoresheet.
Halfway through the second half the Beavers made the most of a counter-attack when Ledgister outran the defence before picking out Tarpey who netted his second.
Hampton then invited the visitors back in the game conceding two goals in 90 seconds due to sloppy marking. Rob King made it 2-1 heading freely past Craig Ross from a corner and Alex Rhodes’ volley made it 3-2.
Despite suffering a set-back the home side never looked like losing the tie and Ledgister cemented the win in injury time making the most of a counter-attack. He unselfishly teed up Tarpey allowing his team- mate to complete his hat-trick.
Next Saturday Hampton take on Hayes & Yeading United in the Middlesex Senior Cup.
