Beavers can only draw in crucial home tie against Gloucester

The Beavers dropped points for the fourth consecutive match as they were held at home to Gloucester City.

Max Kretzschmar’s 41st minute strike cancelled out Joe Parker’s opener for the visitors in what was a lively opening half where Hampton were definitely the better side.

Gloucester held out to claim a point, as Hampton slip to fourth in the table.

The game started at a frantic pace but lacked real goalscoring opportunities until the 31st minute. Great work from Bradley Hudson-Odoi down the Hampton left saw him whip in a floated cross to Max Kretzschmar at the back post. He miscued his initial header, but on the second attempt managed to flick it over the goalie only for Jamie Edge to clear the ball from on his own line.

Chances continued to fall the way of the home side, but despite their dominance it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.

A long ball forward in the 37th minute was missed by both Wassmer and Cook and all of a sudden Joe Parker was in on goal. It looked like he had been pushed too far to the right hand side of the box by some excellent tracking back from Michael Kamara only for the forward to unleash a superb strike across Seny Dieng and into the bottom corner.

Credit to Hampton they struck back almost immediately, as four minutes later Kretzschmar robbed the Gloucester defence and from a similar position as Parker hit a low crisp left-footed shot beat the keeper to nestle in the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

The Beavers emerged after half time without goalscorer Kretzschmar. It looked to be an injury, as he did receive treatment during the first half.

His absence in the second half was very noticeable as the home side couldn’t find any rhythm to properly test Andy Hannah in the Gloucester goal.

Shaun McAuley was also forced off in the 51st minute, who has been struggling recently with a calf problem, in another blow to Hampton’s promotion push.

There was a lot of endeavour in the second half and Hampton were undoubtedly the better side, but there was little in the way of clear cut chances.

The best chance of the second half came from an Ed Williams free-kick just on the edge of the Hampton box which was acrobatically saved by Seny Dieng to stop what would have been a real smash and grab victory.

In the dying seconds Bradley Hudson-Odoi looked like he might snatch it for the home side, as Ben Wynter’s cross from the right hand side found him unmarked in the six yard box. It wasn’t at an ideal height for him, but had he got his head on it we could well have been celebrating three points.

Chelsmford’s victory sees them leapfrog us and go into third place. Poole Town on Tuesday night now becomes a very, very important match as we try to get out of our recent slump and try and confirm our playoff place.
