Romans cut down Beavers record

Two early goals kill off Hampton’s chances of making it 22 games.

The unbeaten run finally came to an end, on a dank drizzily day at Twerton Park as two quick goals in the first half from Bath City's Frankie Artus and Jack Compton shattered the 21 game unbeaten edifice.

A slow burner of a start to the match saw both sides take their time to get into the game but on 17 minutes, the hosts took the lead.

Jack Compton's free kick was flighted into the heart of the Hampton box and making a diagonal run, Frankie Artus managed get in front of the defence and flicked his header past Agboola in the Hampton goal, who didn't have much of a chance.

Just as soon as the Beavers regained their composure, they were hit with a second.

Nat Jarvis ran across Josh Casey as he tried to get on a cross field pass and after minimal contact, the Bath forward tumbled to the floor in the box.

The referee gave the penalty, which was seen as a very soft decision by most in the press box; Compton then stepped up to ram it past Agboola into the net.

Hampton looked somewhat anaemic in the first half but they forced their first chance 10 minutes before half time from a Max Kretschmar free kick, which was met by Josh Taylor. The header was met by a diving Luke Southwood in the Bath goal, pushing the ball away to his left. The keeper then regained his feet to prevent Brendan Kiernan converting the rebound.

The second half saw the Beavers put some more pressure on the Romans defence and on 54 minutes, they created a clear chance. Baptiste's pass freed up Brendan Kiernan through the centre, and as the midfielder tried to round Southwood, the keeper stayed calm and deflected the shot for a corner.

Bath were standing firm as the Beavers tried to break the Romans defence open, but there was no way through for the Beavers as the hosts were in no mood to let Hampton have their own way.

Shots from Kiernan and sub Harry Crawford were blocked by the mass of black and white shirts in the box, as Bath pulled everyone back.

With 5 minutes left, Harry Crawford made himself an opening on the edge of the box, but his shot was easily saved by Southwood as the Beavers just couldn't find a way through the black and white ranks.
