The visitors started strongly but it was Hampton who had the first clear chance, Shaun Jeffers latching onto Max Kretzschmar's flick on but his low effort ran across goal, evading Brendan Kiernan in the centre.
On 15 minutes, the Wings were awarded a penalty after a soft challenge on Adam Combes by Charlie Wassmer, which barely merited being called a foul.
However, keeper Seny Dieng stayed tall and punched away Goldberg's kick, which was directly down the centre of the goal, and after a scramble, the ball was turned in by Jack Jebb, leading to enthusiastic Wings celebrations.
What the Welling players hadn't seen though, was the assistant on the far touch line with his flag out horizontally to denote an offside player and after a brief discussion between referee and assistant, the goal was ruled out.
Hampton then gathered themselves after this stroke of luck, creating chances, and Brendan Kiernan was involved in the best of them. First a ferocious half volley that was saved by keeper Vose, then he turned creator for Shaun Jeffers, whose shot was blocked out as far as Kretzschmar; Max's shot also being blocked.
Welling were getting frustrated with the afternoon as first Jebb and then Callum Driver were both booked for dissent, setting the later tone of the game.
In the second half, the Beavers looked the more positive and it took a good save by Vose to deny Jeffers a goal as the striker picked up a neat Kiernan pass in beating the offside trap.
Not long after, Bradley Hudson-Odoi finally got a sight of goal but his shot took a deflection an dribbled away for a corner.
For all their endeavour, the Wings weren't as penetrative as they would have liked but they nicked a goal on the hour as Jamie Philpott latched onto Jebb's free kick, the header flying out of Dieng's reach and into the net.
With 20 minutes left, the game twisted back towards the Beavers as Jebb brought down Kretzschmar on the edge of the box. The referee decided that this was a yellow card offence and as the midfielder has already been shown the yellow before, he was shown the red by the referee.
Hampton pressed on and with 75 minutes on the watch, thought they'd scored as Shaun Jeffers stabbed the ball into the net from close range. In the build up though, the referee detected a handball and awarded the Wings a free kick instead.
Hudson-Odoi forced another save from Vose as the Beavers tightened the screw on their visitors, then with under 10 minutes left, he had a shot cleared off the line as Welling put bodies on line to prevent the equaliser.
Hampton kept up the pressure and with literally seconds left, they got the goal the pressure had deserved.
The ball was cleared out to Kiernan, who teed himself up and fired in a powerful shot from some 20-odd yards. It struck the Welling defender Durojaiye and flew past a wrong footed Vose to break the Wings hearts, who had defended well with 10 men.
The frustration boiled over for Welling's Jack Parkinson after the final whistle and for an ill-judged comment to the referee, he was shown a red card, leaving manager Jamie Coyle with future selection problems.
