Beavers ease past Hamlet in friendly win
It could've been more but for Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards' outstanding display
Dowse elected once again to play different lineups in each half and it was the first half team that looked the more threatening as Harry Crawford and Millie Hysi controlled the centre midfield, giving the gaffer things to think about ahead of the season's start.
Hampton were on the front foot from the start with Edwards having to make early saves from triallist Adam Marriott and Chinua Cole before HARRY CRAWFORD picked up the rebound from his own initial shot, and joyfully crashed it past the stranded Edwards with just 15 minutes played.
It was almost 2 just minutes later as Marriott beat the offside trap, and faced with a 1-on-1 with Edwards, proceeded to drag the shot wide of the post when a goal looked on the cards.
Just before the half hour, Cole had another chance from an excellent Trey Williams pass, but Edwards blocked the attempt with his legs to frustrate the Beavers further.
The Hamlet were looking like the game was threatening to get away from them but just after the half hour, Nathan Green powered forward through the Hampton defence, his shot beat Howes, but hit the post and it was gratefully cleared away.
The Beavers went straight back on the offensive, Marriott picking up a weak Edwards clearance and slotting in Trey Williams but the keeper made a good save, diving to his left.
The half time break was closing in as the Hamlet grabbed an equaliser that was little against the play, Green getting on the end of Nyren Clunis' cross to sink the shot past Howes and into the net from the edge of the box.
The second half opened with the Beavers looking to retake the lead and nearly did not, Sam Gallagher's cross was met by the leaping Ryan Moss, unmarked in the box, but Edwards pawed it away.
Just before the hour, Dowse changed pretty much the entire lineup, with only Michael Kamara not being replaced and the game lost a little of its pattern.
With just 20 minutes left, Taurean Roberts' wicked cross from the left was met by the lurking and onside Max Kretzschmar, but the midfielder's header was off target, to his annoyance.
The game looked to drifting towards a draw but Brendan Kiernan made sure it didn't get there. Duncan Culley controlled the ball in midfield amidst loud shouts for handball, his pass freed up Roberts down the left. The winger's cross was met by Kiernan inside the 6 yd box and he steered it home to give Hampton the win, leaving Dowse with some decisions to make.
